It's Your Call

At least half is in how it's taken.

Who touches it, and where

One must remember that motives matter,

[hunger for meaning or unused time]

and so does the life that preceded the glance

[broken from labor or lost at home]

whether clutching shredded bits into gut like tentacles of anemone

or reassembling the whole under microscope

or shredding with aimless scalpel

I have no part in any

and all happens as it will.

I'm going to share a commissioned piece I just finished today. This is my first time doing a large-scale oil pastel piece. It's definitely a different way of going about things, and I think I will try it again some time.

I made the mistake of buying a non-standard-sized illustration board for this project, so I had to order a custom-made frame. That gets expensive. Bad move on my part.

Arranging my art from the past few years for my show next week made me realize that I miss the old ink drawing style. Yes, tedious, but it has an edginess I can't achieve with other media. The result is worth it.

At the Door

I blame Genesis 4 for this one.
It took me a good three hours to draw. I had fun with the slightly warped depth and perspective.

The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lighted up the world; the earth trembled and shook.

Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen.

Aftershock

Flames leaped into the sky
and music roared and burst
and a thousand ideas for making
Life just what we want
crashed through my head
like the waterfall
where we sat quietly and listened
to its roaring; now it roared
inside and I knew
I knew I knew
I had what I wanted
and we would
never go back
there.

The serpent scratched
its ear with its hind leg
and I looked at the fruit
in my bare hand,
and I tried to pick one
out of the thousand.
They were fading now
along with the flames
and I wanted more;
another bite.

42 Hours

42 hours awake, one of them spent drawing this picture.

I made it on a series of flights to Managua, Nicaragua.

The First Spray Painting

Making this picture opened the door to new medium experimentation for me. It was my first attempt at stencil-cutting and spray paint.

Coffee Is an Art Supply . . . Right?

This is the 20th painting in my Philippians series.

I used glue, various kinds of paper, acrylic paint, coffee, and tissue.

Using Free Art Supplies

It's an enjoyable challenge to create a piece exclusively from free materials. In my experience, imposing a framework for a piece is the most important part of its formation. Often I create that framework via medium.

Materials for this piece come from a box of donated items: a rejected, pre-cut mat, a piece of scrap paper, and a pencil stub.

Why I Finish Drawings I Hate

I am not patient.
Or at least, not as patient as I'd like to be.
I have this unspoken rule [about to be spoken] that obligates me to not start a new drawing until I've finished the last one. It's less a rule than a compulsion. So even if I hate the drawing, or I lose the exact marker I need, etc., it must be finished before I can start something new.
Sometimes it sucks.
This "rule" probably has a lot to do with my obscene prolificity.

I'm never doing a large scale colored pencil picture again (that's probably a lie).
