Spread Out

Nothing is anywhere that I can guess on the first try
So I lose myself in wondering where
and the white space strangles ideas,
Use them
QUICK
before they get killed.

Non-Verbal

Not that there was much in the way of norms in my life to begin with ... but I'm a little thrown off my groove this week.  I'm temporarily maintaining my family's business while they're out of town,  which means a) i have few art supplies with me, and b) i have less time devoted to art.

However, it keeps me going, so i keep it going, regardless... though perhaps to a lesser degree.

I'm realizing that as convenient as small artworks are,  i greatly prefer working on a large scale.

How It Feels to Know Too Much

This is one of my early spray paintings.  It's 12" x 12", with black, red, and grey gloss spray paints on wood.

42 Hours

42 hours awake, one of them spent drawing this picture.
I made it on a series of flights to Managua, Nicaragua.

It’s a continuation of my Philippians series.

Scratchboard Rat

This is one of my first scratchboard pieces: it functioned more as practice than anything else.  It's surprising what a variety of values a scratchboard can yield.

Crooked City

when
can we leave this
this tangle
this evil tangle
this dirty corner?
from muddy eyes
we look
out.

this crooked city:
it eats us and
now we
can't get out.

Bellygod

This drawing is part of my Philippians series.  It's pen and colored pencil on 8" x 8" drawing paper. You can see more of them here, or you can also look at other surreal drawings I've made here.

Controlled chaos: "The Starvation for Home"

The Starvation for Home
3' x 4'
Acrylic on canvas
I really enjoyed making this painting—employing gravity and excessive amounts of messy watered-down paint.  I get a kick out of using destructive forces for constructive means.

I like hands, and I use them in art a lot.  You can see more paintings with them.

The Purification

This image is based on text in the book of 1 John. It is the first piece I've had displayed in a gallery.

Water soluble ink on vellum.

We are thirsty

They said they would give us water—so we came. We choked on dust, but we followed, our tongues hanging out in anticipation.

They gave us water. It came to us in shiny cups, glinting in the sunlight. We held out our hands, we held open our mouths.

But this water didn't quench our thirst.

This water cracked our dry lips, shriveled our tortured intestines.

Now we are more thirsty than before.

I have more portrait photography.  You can find it here.
