Somehow I've been most productive on Sunday.

It turns out giving myself permission to chill actually increases my ability get stuff done.  I'm cool with that.

Here is one of the things I did today.

"Choose"
8" x 8"
Diluted/textured acrylic paint, pen, acrylic ink

Plastic Wrap—Who Knew?

I watered down some green paint, poured it over a piece of paper, scrunched plastic wrap and smushed it down onto the paper between two pieces of wood.  After that dried, I repeated the process with watered down blue paint.  I was extremely pleased with the result.
I then drew on the paper, resulting in this drawing:

Untitled
8" x 12"
Acrylic and pen on paper

Spread Out

Nothing is anywhere that I can guess on the first try
So I lose myself in wondering where
and the white space strangles ideas,
Use them
QUICK
before they get killed.

"Broken Teeth"
18" x 24"
Sumi and acrylic inks, colored chalk,
charcoal, and paint markers

It's Your Call

At least half is in how it's taken.
Who touches it, and where
One must remember that motives matter,
[hunger for meaning or unused time]
and so does the life that preceded the glance
[broken from labor or lost at home]
whether clutching shredded bits into gut like tentacles of anemone
or reassembling the whole under microscope
or shredding with aimless scalpel

I have no part in any
and all happens as it will.

"Her Head"

Little Singing Bird

I made this piece as a graduation gift for my sister Kenzie.
She likes to sing.
But she isn't a bird--she's a human.

"little singing bird"
8" x 10"
tissue, various papers, and sketches on wood

Please Stop Me

I used some strange materials to create this image.  I started with a crumpled up piece of hp photo paper that was bound for the garbage.  I then did the sketch with a uniball pen, and splattered on some orange-red ink and—strangely enough—vanilla extract.

At the Door

I blame Genesis 4 for this one.
It took me a good three hours to draw. I had fun with the slightly warped depth and perspective.

See more monsters.

Jagged Teeth

The burnt mountains look like dead things,
like hunched-over travelers,
frozen & forgotten
tree stumps,
a burnt-down city,
jagged teeth.

This was my first watercolor piece. See others.

The Way of the Sea

The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lighted up the world; the earth trembled and shook.
Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen.

Pen and marker on vellum; based on Psalm 77.

42 Hours

42 hours awake, one of them spent drawing this picture.
I made it on a series of flights to Managua, Nicaragua.

It’s a continuation of my Philippians series.

Words Are Dangerous

My House III
8" x 8"
Watercolor and pen on vellum

My brain is full.  Words are dangerous—
so I won't give them to you tonight.

You can find more art based on human bones here, or check out the other images in the "My House" series.

Self Portrait

In the one art class I have taken—Figure Drawing I—I was required to create a self portrait. There were no guidelines other than that, so I decided that my self portrait didn't have to involve my face.  Then I created my own guidelines:

  1. draw right hand with left hand
  2. draw left hand with right hand

Strangely, I think I drew better with my non-dominant hand.

Scratchboard Rat

This is one of my first scratchboard pieces: it functioned more as practice than anything else.  It's surprising what a variety of values a scratchboard can yield.

Robot / Book

Creativity isn't really creation.  It's just combining existing elements.

Crooked City

when
can we leave this
this tangle
this evil tangle
this dirty corner?
from muddy eyes
we look
out.

this crooked city:
it eats us and
now we
can't get out.
