The Deeper One

It's always there, no matter where I am.

I have only to remember to look for it.

Something Bigger

I think making art is fighting for something bigger.

When I make art, I'm not letting the emptiness win.

This was taken outside of Carnforth, Lancashire. See more of my photographs.

Into the Sea

"We know what the surface of the moon is better than we know what the surface of the sea floor is.”

—James Gardner

This is an old photograph taken with an even older camera along the coast of Oregon, and tortured for some time in Photoshop.  See more of my photo manipulation here.

Beehive Lake

This photo was taken at Beehive Lake, southwest of Wenatchee, WA.

The Way of the Sea

The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lighted up the world; the earth trembled and shook.
Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen.

Pen and marker on vellum; based on Psalm 77.

Why I Finish Drawings I Hate

I am not patient.
Or at least, not as patient as I'd like to be.
I have this unspoken rule [about to be spoken] that obligates me to not start a new drawing until I've finished the last one.  It's less a rule than a compulsion.  So even if I hate the drawing, or I lose the exact marker I need, etc., it must be finished before I can start something new.
Sometimes it sucks.
This "rule" probably has a lot to do with my obscene prolificity.

I'm never doing a large scale colored pencil picture again (that's probably a lie).

This is I think the 17th image in my Philippians series.

Blurring Away the Bars

Humans are amazing, in that they can get used to almost anything.
How much of this adaptiveness comes from repainting reality to look kinder?

Sometimes I catch a glimpse of things I've been blurring out.

It makes me wonder:
what might we be missing?

Existential Weather

I took a perfectly clear picture of my sister building her card house, but I like the blurry one better.
When I took the photo, I thought of this phrase below.  I no longer understand what it had to do with anything.

"This is what we mean by success."

Sinking Tree (Photograph)

If the landscape changes faster than someone, he must try to breathe until he cannot.

2 Things I Observed in San Diego

A wounded cactus, a bird taking flight at sundown . . . these are two of the things I observed in San Diego.

I also stumbled across an astronomy club down town, and they let me take a look through their telescope.

I got to see four of Jupiter's moons.  It made understand: there's a lot more to see.
